Humanly speaking we all behave better when someone is watching. Spiritually and practically we benefit when someone who cares about our best interests and future success “watches” for us.
The principle is basic to making disciples and the mentee, one mentored or coached, has two tents or coverings to choose from. One tent is Truth—a covering of God’s “proven” truth, expressed by those who personally have proven truth in their lives and have often paid a price for truth in a significant way. As watchers they cover us, not to rule over but rather to offer wisdom to encourage and strengthen us.
The second covering is philosophical—the man-conscious approach Isaiah warned against: “What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,” says the Lord. “You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins. For without consulting me, you have gone down to Egypt for help. You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection. You have tried to hide in his shade. But by trusting Pharaoh, you will be humiliated, and by depending on him, you will be disgraced.” (Isaiah 30:1-3, NLT)
Biblically Egypt represents the world and Pharaoh the world system and its ways. So, don’t go down to Egypt! If you’re already headed that way or thinking about it, turn around—change your mind, return to Godly instruction, asking the Lord to cover you and in all your decision-making seek out wise men and women. Submit your plan to their counsel before proceeding: Guard against wrong words, verbally agree with words the Lord has already spoken concerning you and your household, choose restraint by His Word and instead of going “in and out” and back and forth to other tents, remain in the Lord’s tent.
Strengthen yourself… in the Lord!
