In every generation, the character of the children emerging in that generation is determined by the spiritual conviction of their parents. A servant attitude, moral self-discipline, and the knowledge of God’s desire to bless are necessary for growing a generation to greatness.

Children acquire so much from those who train them, imitating mannerisms, attitudes, and habits. They learn their parents’ values through observation—things valued determine where time is invested. One’s manner and attitude toward those things further ascribe value.

The value parents place on spiritual life is evidenced as they live by conviction, not convenience. Children mimic this commitment and make it their own; their preferences entrenched early. Children in the home realize whether God is present or distant and probably understand more than we realize about whether the adults in their lives are living in genuine relationship with God, or in mere religious routine.

By age four or five, if God is valued less or if His Word is not taught, little hearts naturally gravitate to the biblical description of a worldly character—lusts of the flesh, lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life—all learned watching the lifestyles of the adults around them, those training them.

Dedicate your children to the Lord. Seek Him for wisdom to turn them away from self-interest and self-absorption and toward God, their heavenly Father, the one to whom they owe their lives.

Teach them, train them, and pray for them every day.

Amen.
