Similar to the way a metal detector fast-tracks in search of hidden objects, Scripture is an instrument of detection, sweeping back and forth over areas of our lives like the device searching for an object; like that instrument, the Word of God searches our thought life and can bring attention to wrong or misguided thinking. The function of the human mind as it processes thought explains why daily meditation in Scripture is important.

Outside thoughts enter the subconscious mind and are established, literally, before anyone knows they’re there! Hundreds of thoughts pass through the mind this way, some becoming a foundation for something we will eventually believe or trust in—including things we wouldn’t even consider at all, much less believe or trust in—if only we knew. The process is subliminal, “operating below the threshold of conscious perception, inadequate to produce conscious awareness but able to evoke a response.” [1]

Meditation in God’s Word guards the mind and, like a lamp, exposes dark unbelief (developed from misguided thoughts) and doubt (the result of unbelief) that produce thoughts that question the Lord—His Word, His ways, and most of all, His unquestionable love. The cumulative effect of such thoughts and the belief systems they create muddies discernment until, eventually, the heart is drawn away from confident trust in God. At times like these, we need more light; we need more of God’s Word!

Difficult times overwhelm us only if we ignore the fact that God’s Word is our protection. It stabilizes our minds and causes light of truth to flood our thinking. The result is confidence with an increase in faith, and strength to rise above anything that questions God’s love and His complete protection for us: “For the word of God is alive and powerful.”

Amen.
